Occurrence remarks | I was looking for a bug under a rock when to my surprise…This beauty was sitting at the entrance to a shallow hole with just its front legs visible. I was intrigued by the slightly metallic blue-black colour, and thought it might have been a dead spider that had been dragged in by the ant colony also living under the rock. I cautiously disturbed the nest with a stick to see if I could identify the mystery creature when the rear end slowly emerged, removing all doubt as to its species.Body length quite small - only about 5cm including tail. Tail upturned like a hook, segmented and barbed on the end. Front legs turned out to be a pair of thick pincers. The creature was disinterested in me, showing no aggressive movements - perhaps because of the cold temperatures at the moment? I replaced the rock and left it to its business. The only sighting I’ve ever had of this animal, though the internet tells me they are common in this region. Guess I don’t look under enough rocks?! |
