Organism remarks Characterised by: (i) tough shell-like peridium embedded with soil and roots; (ii) dull kakhi powdery gleba; (iii) inner side of peridium with embedded roots; (iv) central sterile yellowish-cream, hard, core of tissue; (v) glebal core is solid and loosely held to endopendium by abundant very thin, radiating, white trabeculae (more like hyphal strands, see photos); (vi) core easily dislodged from endoperidium. Spores: ellipsoid to subfusoid with conspicuous basal collar, smooth, thin-walled, dull greenish-grey in KOH. 8.4 x 4.8u; 8.7 x 4.4u; 9.4 x 4.5u (largest); 8.3 x 4.8u; 9.1 x 4.0u; 7.9 x 4.4u; 7.3 x 3.7u; 7.9 x 4.2u; 7.1 x 4.2u; 7.3 x 4.3u; 7.8 x 4.3u. Gleba Hyphae: 6.0; 4.5; 7.0; 7.4; 4.2; 6.9; 9.5u broad. No clamps seen. Smooth, with walls up to 2u thick. Oil globules floating free in abundance; glebal core solid; locules absent in gleba core; ocassional globose cell 16.9u diamaeter; oeliferous hyphae present; some bundles of parallel tighgtly packed; endocutis thin, papery hyphae are present, and could be interpreted as 'veins'. Hyphae of trabeculae: 4 to 5u broad, smooth, thin-walled, tightly packed parallel, partially agglutinated. Spores: 7.1-9.4 x 4.0 - 4.8u. The following suggest E8198 is M. brevispora: (i) spores mainly under 9u long; (ii) gleba core attached by abundant fine trabeculae, easily detached; (iii) gleba not loculate. However E8198 does not have yellowish-grey spore mass, or an inconspicous cup on spores, or obvious open pockets in the gleba core. In having greenish, spore mass and lacking pockets in gleba core it also closely matches M. clelandi known only from eastern Australia. Life mode: M.
Occurrence remarks 20 cm underground.
